Treasure Vault Keys are a type of Treasure Item found as a reward for Wayfinder Voyages issued by the Gold Hoarders Trading Company in Sea of Thieves. These Keys look like Totem statues that lead to Totem themed Gold Hoarder Treasure Vaults hidden on Large Islands all over The Sea of Thieves. The Keys can either be sold to the Gold Hoarders Representatives on Outposts who are willing to offer Gold, Reputation and Emissary Value for these Chests, or they can be used to open up a specific Gold Hoarder Treasure Vault for a chance for more valuable Treasure.

Mechanics[]

A player can only hold one Gold Hoarder Vault Key at once and cannot use items or sprint at the same time. When dropped, Vault Keys will emit a white glint from far away, making them easier to spot. Treasure will float to the top when dropped in water, however, they will start sinking to the bottom after 5 minutes have passed. Any Treasure dropped on land or on the shoreline will stay in-game for a long time. Untouched Treasure will disappear when an Island respawns. Treasure that has been dropped in Deep Waters will disappear after sinking to the bottom.

Every Vault Key can be caught with a Ship's Harpoon. Vault Keys are found in and can also be placed in any Container Chests. When closed, Container Chests cover the colourful glint of the Treasure.

Like any Treasure, Vault Keys can be sold for Gold and Reputation, however, they can also be used to unlock a Gold Hoarder Treasure Vault. The location of the Treasure Vault is noted in the name of the Vault Key itself. Additionally, players can read an inscription on the Key, hinting at the location of the Vault on the Island.

There are three types of each Treasure Vault Key - Stone, Silver and Golden. The material of the Key determines the value of the Key and also the total value of the Treasure inside the Gold Hoarder Treasure Vault. The chances of receiving each type of Vault Key are dependent on the difficulty and region of the Wayfinder Voyage.

Where to Find[]

Treasure Vault Keys are currently only found as the main reward of Wayfinder Voyages issued by Gold Hoarders. During the Voyage, players will gain access to a Golden Wayfinder Compass in their Quest Radial Menu, leading them to the buried locations of Torn Map Parchments. These Parchments will make up a Torn Treasure Map that reveals the location of the Key as an X on a Large Island. The X will reveal a Collector’s Chest with Gold and one Treasure Vault Key inside. Players do not need to complete the whole Torn Map to complete the Voyage. If the first parchments already reveal the location of the X and Players recognise the Island, they can go and immediately dig it up.

Emissary Mechanics[]

Any Player Crews sailing as Gold Hoarders Emissaries can receive Emissary Grade Reputation for picking up and putting Treasure Vault Keys on their Ships.

Rewards[]

Treasure Vault Keys can be sold to Gold Hoarders Representatives at any Outpost for Gold and Reputation with the Company. Gold Hoarders Emissaries will also receive Emissary Value, and an increase to the Gold and Reputation gains. Alternatively, crews can choose to sell any Treasure Vault Keys to the Reaper's Bones Representative at The Reaper's Hideout instead for equal Gold and Emissary Value gains, but less Reputation gains with the Reapers.

The following is a table of the multiplicative Rewards for selling Treasure Vault Keys as Graded Emissaries.

Emissary Grade Rewards, Reputation & Emissary Value
Grade 1 Base Reward
Grade 2 +33% Base Reward
Grade 3 +67% Base Reward
Grade 4 +100% Base Reward
Grade 5 +150% Base Reward

When sold, the whole Crew is rewarded with equal amounts of Gold, Reputation and Emissary Value, while Alliance Members will earn half of the Gold and Reputation Gains, but no Emissary Value.

All Treasure Vault Keys have a variable value with the minimum and maximum reported Gold rewards documented in the tables below.
