Summary[edit | edit source]

Umbra has appeared in The Sea of Thieves on Lagoon of Whispers, chronicling stories of various Legendary Player Pirates to have left their marks here. With the Legends of the Sea (Content Update), every major Easter Egg in Sea of Thieves has been made interactable. Once inspected, they provide the story behind these in-game immortalisaaitons along with Commendations, which unlock various unique themed Tattoos for purchase from Umbra. The locations of the Easter Eggs are hinted at in the Legends of the Sea tab under the Bilge Rats Commendation menu. Additionally, Umbra has left 10 Journals all across The Sea of Thieves documenting the changes to Sea of Thieves in past Bilge Rat Adventures.

Umbra's Journals on Lagoon of Whispers[edit | edit source]

There are three Journals on Lagoon of Whispers written by Umbra that tell of her story and motivations. Note that these Journals have no Commendations tied to them, they just provide background to how Umbra made it to The Sea of Thieves.

Journal I[edit | edit source]

Dialogue icon.png

There is a journal here, hand-written in a hasty fashion.

I've been captured by pirates... again! Just my luck. I overheard the crew discussing their plans, looks like I'm heading back to the Sea of Thieves. I must embrace the path that destiny has put before me. I'll let these fools navigate the Shroud, then I'll escape once we're safe. Second time I've been caught by pirates and dragged here... perhaps I'm where I'm meant to be.

Journal II[edit | edit source]

Dialogue icon.png

This journal is written in a steady hand, by someone taking their time.

Now that I've set up camp, this place feels more like home. But, if I'm going to stay, I'll need to go and get more supplies. I'll go soon. Listening to my captors' tales of legendary deeds has got me more intrigued. I'd love to document the weird and wonderful people who live here! I should research these legends. But first, I will record the full tale of my arrival. Fortunately, running out of paper is no problem for me...

Journal III[edit | edit source]

Dialogue icon.png

This journal talks about a daring escape.

Notes for my life story: Once through the Devil's Shroud, I waited until the crew had drunk themselves silly in celebration. I escaped the brig by regaling my jailor with one of my most exciting stories. Once he came closer, he was already done for! I snuck onto a rowboat and made it here. As I rowed away, I noticed that the Shroud ate a huge hole in their ship. I doubt I'll see them again.

Legends of the Sea Journals[edit | edit source]

There are 10 numbered Journals written by Umbra hidden in specific locations related to various Bilge Rat Adventures, chronicling the changes made by these events. These Books have Commendations tied to them, which reward the player with Doubloons upon reading them.

Legends of the Sea I[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book on Devil's Ridge, overlooking the sea. The Journal is on a Southern Rock formation.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about the arrival of The Hungering One... signed by ‘Umbra’.

After asking Merrick himself, deciphering his drunken journals and speaking to pirates who were there, I believe this is it.
This is where they used Merrick’s accidental enchanted Shanty to summon forth the first Megalodon - The Hungering One!
Those pirates avenged poor Merrick’s crew, not to mention his legs. But now all of the ancient, deep sharks have awoken...

Legends of the Sea I.png

Legends of the Sea II[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book on Crescent Isle, where Salty once rested. It is near the southern Cave entrance amid broken Barrels.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about the origins of The Warsmith… signed by ‘Umbra’

I met Salty - a genuine skeletal parrot! He was once a man, but was changed when creating Cursed Cannonballs from one of Flameheart’s Cannons.
His partner in alchemy was the weaponsmith, Wanda, who forced him to take the brunt of the curse. But she did not escape unscathed.
Flameheart’s hatred fed her own, until she became the twisted Skeleton Captain, ‘The Warsmith’. She waged a failed war on the Outposts.

Legends of the Sea II.png

Legends of the Sea III[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book on The Devil's Thirst, at a small camp. The Journal is in the turned over ship’s hull, right below an Ammo Box.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about the fate of the Forsaken Shores Alliance... signed by ‘Umbra’.

When Grace Morrow and Stitcher Jim joined their crews to form The Forsaken Alliance, they travelled to places few pirates had seen.
They even reached The Devil’s Roar thanks to the Shroudbreaker, but Stitcher Jim was secretly seeking power for his then-master, the Gold Hoarder.
He betrayed and killed all of them but Captain Morrow, who survived her poisoning but was trapped in the Roar. A dark tale indeed.

Legends of the Sea III.png

Legends of the Sea IV[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book on The Crooked Masts, under a beacon's light. On the platform by the Festival of the Damned Beacon atop The Crooked Masts, can only be reached via shooting yourself with the Ship's Cannons.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about the Festival of the Damned… signed by ‘Umbra’.

This was no easy spot to reach! During the Festival of the Damned, pirates would light these Beacons with various coloured flames.
How incredible that the Ferryman allowed access to the Flames of Fate, which change to reflect how a pirate dies.
I’d like to learn more about them… but I’m not rushing to the Ferry of the Damned. What if I don’t come back? A chilling prospect.

Legends of the Sea IV.png

Legends of the Sea V[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book on Kraken's Fall, near a camp to the east (South of the large camp) and the remains of a Kraken. Inside a Kraken’s vertebrae close to the NPC camp.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about the hunting of Krakens… signed by ‘Umbra’.

The Fogs on the Sea of Thieves are heavy, but were especially bad during a certain year. They seemed to stir up the Krakens and Sharks.
Perhaps those creatures just saw a chance to prey on lost ships, but the tables soon turned as pirates realised something...
Many Krakens and Megalodons eat up valuable loot from the ships they sink. Suddenly, hunting them for goodies became a tempting prospect!

Legends of the Sea V.png

Legends of the Sea VI[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book in the Pirate Legend Hideout, safely shelved away.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about a man named 'Ramsey' and the Gold Hoarder... signed by 'Umbra'.

It seems that the feared Gold Hoarder, a great Skeleton Lord who amassed great wealth through the Gold Hoarders Company, was recently defeated.
Many pirates travelled far and braved terrible traps, Skeleton Lords and more to rebuild the Shroudbreaker and reach his island.
The Hoarder was once a man, until his greed took over. His friend Ramsey was forced to turn his back on him. Could Ramsey in fact be...?

Legends of the Sea VI.png

Legends of the Sea VII[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book on Hidden Spring Keep, overlooking the fort. Atop the southern climbable watchtower.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about Duke selling gunpowder to the Trading Companies… signed by ‘Umbra’.

The skeletons once began hoarding huge amount of Gunpowder, known since as ‘Black Powder Stashes’.
The Trading Companies didn’t like that, so Duke of the Bilge Rats saw a chance to make the seas safer while also making a lot of gold.
It seems this was Duke’s first step towards acquiring the connections and capital needed to launch the Black Market.

Legends of the Sea VII.png

Legends of the Sea VIII[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book on Shipwreck Bay, tucked away inside a wreck. Inside the Blackwyche’s Captain’s Quarters, below the cornered armchair.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about the theft of the Dark Relics… signed by ‘Umbra’.

I have found some strange artefacts, which I believe to be what the Order of Souls calls ‘Dark Relics’.
Many of these arcane objects were stolen from them in an organised effort by the Skeletons, though Duke was able to retrieve many.
The Dark Relics were later used for terrible deeds, opening windows to other worlds and dispelling powerful curses!

Legends of the Sea VIII.png

Legends of the Sea IX[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book at The Wild Treasures Store, a Seapost out in The Wilds. The journal is under the hammock.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about Duke’s business and the arrival of the Emporium… signed by ‘Umbra’

I’ve come across strange activity by Duke. It seems he got much of his Black Market stock from these accursed Reaper’s Chests.
The things he couldn’t use - piles of bones, mostly - he sold on as Rag and Bone Crates. Strange what people will do to make their way.
These Pirate Emporium folks, for example. Once Gold Hoarders, now working for some outsider. But such delightful pets they sell!

Legends of the Sea IX.png

Legends of the Sea X[edit | edit source]

Find Umbra's book in the Fort of the Damned, discussing the supernatural. On the western climbable watchtower by the Fortress structure.

Dialogue icon.png

This book is about the appearance of the Fort of the Damned... signed by 'Umbra'.

Stitcher Jim believes that the appearance of the Fort of the Damned is the result of a ritual using the stolen Dark Relics.
Pirates have found that the coloured Flames of Fate can be used to 'wave' the twisted Fort and repel the skeletons seeking to use it.
But what's really going on? Such determination to get into our world... but are we stopping them or helping them by waking the Fort?!

According to notes of concern collected by Umbra, Jaq took a small hiatus from the seas and her friends missed her terribly.

Self-Promoting Pistol Pirate[edit | edit source]

Not All Falcons Fly[edit | edit source]

IOnEI-Falcon.png
According to Umbra’s notes, these are the remains of IOnEI-Falcon, who would famously fall from the crow’s nest again and again.
Perhaps an inner ear problem?

Hint: On Shipwreck Bay, they say a pirate's bones can be found beside a legendary shipwreck.

Location: A marked grave below the central peak of Shipwreck Bay close to the shipwreck of Blackwyche.

Background: Once fall damage was introduce, IOnEI-Falcon died the most in one play session by falling from the Ship's Crow's Nest.

Run Aground[edit | edit source]

Easter Egg - Salty Sands.png

Not Just for Sweeping[edit | edit source]

Clumsy-George.png
Umbra heard rumours of a pirate called Clumsy George, who fought off a kraken with only a broom!
At least, that’s the story he told everyone. He told it so often, they named the tavern after him!

Hint: There must be a story behind this unusual tavern sign on Sanctuary Outpost.

Location: The George & Kraken Tavern sign on Sanctuary Outpost.

Background: Clumsy George received this easter egg for being a pillar of the community and supporting everyone with positive vibes. (Also for being more open with mic communication in this game than any other online game). His trusty broom became an inside joke among the community.

Bound by a Book[edit | edit source]

Xboxx-Addictt GeordieTommy.png

With help from Geordie Tommy, the two crafted this beautiful book to show off their talents. They say it once contained an incredible surprise.

Location: A list pinned on a wooden beam inside the central Fort at Lost Gold Fort.

Background: The parchment honours the top 10 players to earn the most Gold during the Technical Alpha

A Hairy Legacy[edit | edit source]

Easter Egg - Legacy Beard.png
That beard reminds me of the legend of Beardageddon! It’s most certainly modelled after his mighty chin.
The stories say that he fought the Hungering One alone, in only his underwear! Sounds like madness.
Better yet, some accounts suggest that he had a chicken on board which survived to tell the tale...

Hint: Show Umbra the Legacy Beard by speaking to her while wearing it.

Location: You have to purchase and equip the Legacy Beard and then show it to Umbra when talking to her on Lagoon of Whispers.

Killer Qualifications[edit | edit source]

DreadPirateDoug.png
~Dread Pirate Doug~
This pirate had the bright idea of writing out all their skills and pirating history, to ensure they found gainful employment with future crews.
It’s a good thing that the law doesn’t come to the Sea of Thieves...

Hint: On Golden Sands, filling your crew is easy when the pirates advertise in the tavern.

Location: By the fireplace in the Tavern of Golden Sands Outpost.

Background: The Easter Egg reflects Dread Pirate Doug's Pirate Legend Resume for his Pirate.

Dances with Chickens[edit | edit source]

SayHeyRocco.png

When that pirate got hold of several chickens and the coloured lights of the Ferry, things got even stranger!

Hint: Rumour has it that a strange scene was painted on a large rock on Chicken Isle.

Location: You have to purchase and equip the Amethyst Angel Hair Dye and then show it to Umbra when talking to her on Lagoon of Whispers.

One Cross Pirate[edit | edit source]

Capta1n-Cr0ss.png
Capta1n Cr0ss and his fellow pirate pioneers never received these important letters. Clearly, the Sea of Thieves is in dire need of a postal service.

Hint: Rumour says that there's a lot of undelivered mail left in some rubble on Sanctuary Outpost.

Location: A Bag filled to the brim with Letters in the ruins of a house on Sanctuary Outpost.

Background: Capta1n Cr0ss received this Easter Egg for his contributions to the Pioneer Programme and notifying Rare of an issue regarding PC invites.

Points of Contention[edit | edit source]

Daimyo-DoriMa.png
According to Umbra’s notes, Daimyo DoriMa loved nothing more than to list all the things that could be improved around the Sea of Thieves.
Maybe a salty pirate took exception to their critique?!

Hint: Over at Golden Sands, Umbra heard of a pirate who loved to write down their thoughts.

Location: A Skeleton with a Quill and a long Parchment below the water tower in Golden Sands Outpost.

Background: Daimyo DoriMa was commemorated for his contributions to the community as well as his extensive (and lengthy) game feedback.

Helping Hands[edit | edit source]

The Original Deckhands.png
~KattTruewalker, KnightXIII, IOnEI-Falcon, Runic, TheAaronLeigh~
Umbra believes the five names scratched here were among the first pirates to come to the Sea of Thieves - after the Pirate Lord’s crew, of course.

Hint: Five names are scratched into a rock on Cannon Cove, found by walking inland from the dock.

Location: Scribbled names on a rock-face facing the dock on Cannon Cove.

Background: KattTruewalker, KnightXIII, IOnEI-Falcon, Runic and TheAaronLeigh were immortalised for being the first non-Microsoft people to play the Technical Alpha.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil[edit | edit source]

Triheadedmonkey.png
The flag of triheadedmonkey, who would always call out pirates for breaking the Pirate Code. Nobody got away with shenanigans on his watch!

Hint: On Sanctuary Outpost, this flag was raised whenever a pirate stepped out of line.

Location: A Three-headed-monkey flag by the Fireplace in the Tavern of Sanctuary Outpost.

Background: Triheadedmonkey was immortalised here for being an all round good guy and providing endless amounts of forum flags for the Deckhands to look through. Forum moderator extraordinaire!

Scruffy Scribe[edit | edit source]

Capscruffy.png
Upon the Sea of Thieves, many stories have been told,
Of ancient creatures, hoards of gold and of pirates great and bold.
But the tales that matter most, at least that is to me,
Are the ones of love and laughter, and friendship on the sea.
Cap’n “Scruffy” Beardstroker

Hint: A poetic pirate left a scruffy book inside a cave at Shark Bait Cove, beside a shrine.

Location: A Scruffy Book inside the Northern inner cave of Shark Bait Cove.

Background: This tome was added to commemorate the shanties and general rhyming of CapScruffy.

The Gift Givers[edit | edit source]

These five Easter Eggs immortalise Players who gave some form of gifts to others. Once all five Easter Eggs are found, The Gift Givers Tattoo Set is unlocked for purchase from Umbra.

Delicious Delivery[edit | edit source]

Dominik's Community Care Package.png
This package is part of a correspondance between caring pirates from different regions.
Becoming friends despite living far apart, they sent this care package of confectionary - but the contents were scoffed long ago.

Hint: They say that an unusual merchant delivery ended up on the docks at Morrow's Peak.

Location: A package by the Merchant Alliance Company Representative on the Dock of Morrow's Peak Outpost

Background: Dominik received this Easter Egg for a heartwarming story that reached front page of Reddit on r/Gaming - players from Germany and the USA became friends via Sea of Thieves and then the friends exchanged 'gifts' of their favourite local confectionery.

May Contain Boom[edit | edit source]

Xbox4Jackie.png
~Pirate Legend Jackie’s Boombox~
One of the first pirates to make a name for herself on the Seas, Umbra heard that Jackie took this barrel everywhere.
That was perhaps a mistake, but nobody could convince her to leave behind her ‘boombox’.

Hint: A pirate once made quite the bang over at Golden Sands, somewhere behind the shops...

Location: A "boombox" behind the Weaponsmith's Shop at Golden Sands Outpost.

Background: xbox4Jackie was one of the first pirates the Rare crew met on their adventures in the weekly streams.

Big Love in a Small Package[edit | edit source]

Easter Egg - Galleon's Grave.png
Lesleyann was a true pirate legend, who delivered vital gifts to a friend in dire need.
Knowing that her friend was suffering with poor health, she did all in her power to keep her in touch with the rest of the Sea of Thieves.

Hint: A parcel and hat on the dock at Galleon's Grave suggest that the Wilds may be civilised after all.

Location: Package by the Merchant Alliance Representative on Galleon’s Grave Outpost.

Background: Lesleyann was immortalised for delivering a PC to her friend undergoing Chemotherapy so she could play Sea of Thieves. Twitter Link!

Putting the Ship in Friendship[edit | edit source]

Chocmoojoo.png
This model ship, ‘The Allegiant’, was lovingly crafted in fine detail by Chocmoojoo, to celebrate a year of smooth sailing.
Delivered with the help of a community of pirates, this gift is for everyone on the Sea of Thieves to enjoy.

Hint: At The Finest Trading Post is a fine work of craftswomanship.

Location: A Model Ship named 'The Allegiant' behind the counter of The Finest Trading Post.

Background: Chocmoojoo sent a model ship 'The Allegiant' painted in the Rare Ship colours to Rare during the Anniversary Update of Sea of Thieves after which a replica of the ship was added into the game.

Charitable Pirating[edit | edit source]

Easter Egg - Stream Sailor.png
What a stunning, sea-inspired tone you wear. Just like Daggers McTimbers!
She’s quite the generous pirate. She once sailed for 24 hours straight, gaining gold donations from all she passed, to give to pirates in need!
You certainly can’t miss her colourful style when she comes ailing along...

Hint: Show Umbra the Stream Sailor makeup by speaking to her while wearing it.

Location: You have to purchase and equip the Stream Sailor Makeup and then show it to Umbra when talking to her on Lagoon of Whispers.

Background: The Makeup was added as a call-out to the Streamer DaggersMcTimbers, who dabbles in charity streams. The Makeup mimics her own in a Twitter Post where she is showing off her new controller!

The Early Settlers[edit | edit source]

These five Easter Eggs immortalise the very first notorious Players to sail the Sea of Thieves. Once all five Easter Eggs are found, The Early Settlers Tattoo Set is unlocked for purchase from Umbra.

Who's a Good Boy?[edit | edit source]

Kato.png
You don’t need Umbra to know the legend of Kato, the most beloved dog on the seas. Patting him on the head was sure to bring fortune to your voyages!

Hint: On Galleon's Grave, high up on the wreck, there lived a dog of legendary adorableness.

Location: Dog Bowl with bones high up in Galleon’s Grave Outpost. Kato's bowl can also be found outside The Glorious Sea Dog Tavern on the Good Boy team pier, however this one cannot be interacted with.

Background: Kato the Dog was immortalised for being a very good boy. #CaptainKato Twitter Link!

Fool's Gold[edit | edit source]

Pikaaroon.png
Legend has it that The Aaron Leigh minted his own coins as a tribute to the architects of the seas.
He sailed across the world to hand-deliver them, though one somehow ended up here.

Hint: On Cannon Cove, a pirate once thought outside the barrel when it came to making money.

Location: Etching on a Barrel inside the cave of Cannon Cove.

Background: Aaron Leigh (aka Pikaaroon) was immortalised for making a 3D-printed Sea of Thieves/Rare Coin.

Nesting Spot[edit | edit source]

The Crow's Nest.png
The mark of The Crow’s Nest, run by Captain Jay - a pirate who shouted their stories for all to hear. They practically turned this fort into an amphitheatre.

Hint: High as a Crow's Nest, at Crow's Nest Fortress...

Location: The Crow's Nest logo painted on top of the Crow's Nest Fortress spire. Cannons needed to reach it.

Background: The Crow's Nest and Captain Jay were immortalised for being one of the first Youtube Channels to cover Sea of Thieves News and Speculation. Link to Youtube!

Hallowed Ground[edit | edit source]

Hallower1980.png
When the Sea of Thieves as we know it was still taking shape, it is believed that ‘Hallower MCMLXXX’ was the first pirate to visit the Ferry. That rumour is unconfirmed... but they certainly left their mark. Umbra wonders what punishment the Ferryman bestowed for this defacement...

Hint: Stories abound of a pirate brazen enough to deface even the Ferry of the Damned!

Location: Gamertag engraved right by the door on the Ferry of the Damned.

Background: Hallower MCMLXXX was immortalised for being the first player sent to the Ferry of the Damned, which only took 7 minutes, 32 seconds to achieve.

Pirate Leg End[edit | edit source]

Jeph86.png
That leg reminds me of the legendary Peg Leg Perez! Now that pirate gets into some scrapes.
His tale is well known - a pirate who came to these seas long ago, when the Outposts still had fresh paint!
He has a fanatical love for rare things - a collector and explorer with a heart for adventure. Watch out for that one...

Hint: Show Umbra the Sea Dog Pegleg by speaking to her while wearing it.

Location: You have to purchase and equip the Sea Dog Pegleg and then show it to Umbra when talking to her on Lagoon of Whispers.

Background: Jeph "Peg Leg" Perez was immortalised for being a great member of the community, a Play it First attendee, a friend of the studio/staff and the loser of a leg.
