The Helm is a Ship component and Ship customization Item in Sea of Thieves. They are purchased at a Shipwright and equipped via a Ship Customization Chest.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The Helm has a gold-banded spoke that will stick straight up when the Helm is turned to the far left, far right, or the center.
When the gold center spoke passes over the center of the Helm, the player will hear an audible "thump," as well as feeling a vibration if using a controller, indicating that the rudder is pointed straight forward.
During a storm, the Helm can move on its own (also occurs when the player is currently drunk), compasses will also malfunction during a storm.

When the helm is damaged, some handles will break off that prevent turning, and must be repaired with Wooden Planks.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • The Helm is the only way to control the direction of the ship. The sails do not influence the direction.
  • On the Galleon, the Helm will require 2 full rotations to reach the far left or right. On the Sloop, the Helm will require 1 full rotation to reach the far left or right.
