Fog
Fog
Details
Type Weather

Fog is a Weather effect that can envelop 1/3 of a Region in thick white mist. Fog can spawn in any region, and usually lasts for more than an entire day. Foggy weather calms the seas, quieting the waves and the atmosphere. When sailing through Fog, water is still and cannot be heard, with only a slight and eerie hum of a tune accompanying the Ship. Thick Fog covers everything that is not immediately adjacent to the ship, making Landmarks and other Ships difficult to find or see. Therefore, Fog is excellent for both sneaking up on unsuspecting targets as well as losing pursuing players.

Notes

  • The Fort of the Damned is surrounded by a thick fog that can't be seen through from the outside, but can from the inside.
  • Skeletons are not affected by the impairing visual effects of Fog, meaning that they can shoot at the ship with a Cannon from Islands even if you cannot see them.
  • Sometimes the Fog can bug out and instead of hiding all the vessels inside it, show every Ship and Rowboat within the Fog.

Tips

  • In order to gain more visibility in a Fog, Players can climb on top of the Crow's Nest or aim the Ship's Cannons as high as possible and shoot themselves in the air above the Fog.
  • While the fog obscures vision, emissary ships can still be found in the fog via the audible cue when looking at an emissary ship through the spyglass even when completely obscured.
  • Red-tinted Spyglasses (such as Wanda's Spyglass) can improve visibility in Fog by making the outline of Ships more visible.
  • If you are pursuing a player through Fog, pay close attention to all sides of your Ship, as players will often use the opportunity provided by Fog to make unexpected turns and deviations to throw you off course. Try to remain as close to your target as possible to ensure they cannot escape.
  • Using your Map Table properly can be vital to successfully chasing an enemy Ship. Avoiding Islands and other obstacles is imperative during such a chase, as the sound of a collision as well as the time lost stuck against a solid object can give away your position or cause you to lose your target. Additionally, you may be able to track the Ship via your Map Table if they have anything on board that causes their position to be marked (Such as a Reaper's Bones Emissary Flag). Should this not be the case, you may be able to trivialize a chase through Fog by hiding a Reaper’s Chest or Reaper’s Bounty on their Ship, causing their location to be broadcast to you at all times.
  • If you are trying to lose a pursuer in Fog, make sudden, unexpected turns and stops to confuse your pursuer and throw them off course. Making sure that you do not hit any obstacles is imperative, as getting stuck can make you easy to find. Instead, use obstacles as additional line of sight breaks that you can maneuver around and hide behind. If your pursuer catches a glimpse of you, make sure that your ship is no longer visible before making any maneuvers as they may otherwise be able to predict your change in direction. If you are carrying any Treasure on board which may give away your position (Such as a Stronghold Key or Reaper's Chest), throw it off of the Ship if you feel that your Ship's survival is more important than those items, as they can be used to track you. Finally, check your Ship thoroughly for hidden enemy pirates, as they may be privately relaying your position to their crew.
    • If your pursuer is a Reaper's Bones Emissary, you can keep track of their position with your Map Table to make evading them much easier. However, do remember that if they are Grade V that they can track you as well if you have an Emissary Flag.
