The Ferry of the Damned is a ghostly ship sailing in the Sea of the Damned in Sea of Thieves. The Ship is the place where Player Pirates arrive after death. It is sailed by the mysterious Ferryman, who allows Pirates passage back to the Sea of Thieves.

Mechanics

Every time a Player Pirate dies in Adventure Mode while not already in the Sea of the Damned, they are sent to the Ferry of the Damned if they are not Revived or die on an enemy Ship. While on the Ferry of the Damned, Players become ghosts and can interact with the ghosts of other Players who have died. After a variable wait time based on the size of the player's Crew, the door of the Ferry opens and Players can return back to their Ship. Players respawn at a random location on their Ship with full Health and Ammo, along with all of their previously gathered Resource Items.

The wait times per Crew size is as follows:

Crew Size Wait Time (Seconds)
1 15
2 19
3 23
4 25

Features

The Ferry of the Damned sports a ghostly, foggy appearance with mostly blue and black colors. The ship resembles a heavily damaged Galleon, with broken masts, a damaged wheel, floating sails, a chained-off capstan, and splintered or destroyed wood. The lower decks are not accessible outside of A Pirate's Life (Quest) and dense fog blocks players from viewing the greater Sea of the Damned. The ferry is primarily lit by ghostly fog and a few out-of-place candles. All exits from the ship are blocked by invisible walls.

Armoury

Ferry Armoury

The Armoury on the main-mast.

There is an Armoury on the mainmast of the Ferry. Although Players cannot use Weapons on the Ferry, they can use this Armoury to switch their Equipped Weapons before they head back into the Seas.

Well of Fates

The Well of Fates, located in between the main masts, is the main source for obtaining the Flames of Fate. Players can use their Lantern to interact with the Well of Fates to take a Flame, provided that their death met their requirements.

The Well of Fates is also known to cover the stairs leading down to the Ferry's lower decks.

The Ferryman and Tall Tales

Players can talk to the Ferryman, but should not expect him to be much of a conversationalist. Crews can vote on the seventh Tale Book in the Shores of Gold Story Arc, The Fate of the Morningstar, by the Ferryman.

Message From Beyond

Scuttling post

"Tired of finding yourself on here due to other pirates?"

Immediately to the side of the door of the Ferry, there is a posted parchment teaching players about the option to Scuttle their ship within the Crew Menu.

Legends of the Sea

The Gamertag Hallower MCMLXXX is carved beside the door of the Ferry. The story behind this Pirate is uncovered in the Legends of the Sea Quest.

Tall Tales

SPOILER WARNING!
This article contains information that may ruin your enjoyment of discovering the game's secrets for yourself.
Read at your own risk!

The Ferry of the Damned currently plays a key role in two Tall Tales: The Fate of the Morningstar and A Pirate's Life (Quest).

The Fate of the Morningstar

The Fate of the Morningstar Tall Tale can be initiated by interacting with a Tall Tale book left of the Ferryman. During the Tale, three crew members of the Morningstar can be interacted with on the deck of the Ferry.

A Pirate's Life

During the A Pirate's Life Tall Tale, players must board the Ferry via Rowboat in order to free an imprisoned Jack Sparrow from the ship's brig. This makes the lower decks of the Ferry accessible, Food and Cannonball Barrels as well as a well-populated brig can be found. The Tall Tale also allows players to interact with the Ferry's Cannons, which are used to fend off Davy Jones' ship, the Flying Dutchman. Players must also fight multiple waves of Ocean Crawlers on the deck of the ship.

Trivia

  • The Ferry appears to be missing three of it's eight Cannons when visited on death.
  • The Cannons of the Ferry match the Ghost Cannon skin.
  • The Ferry of the Damned visited during A Pirate's Life (Quest) has a number of differences from the Ferry visited upon death:
    • The Tall Tale Ferry has the 3 cannons missing from the regular version.
    • The grates on the deck of the Ferry, which are usually obstructed by ghostly hands and a bright glow, can be seen through clearly.
    • An Ammo Chest appears right of the mainmast, opposite to the Armoury.
    • Both the Message from Beyond and Legends of the Sea easter egg are missing.
    • The raised stern deck is blocked from players by a wall of ghostly fog.
    • Various minor decorations, such as chains hanging over the ship's cannons, are absent.
