Explosives are a type of Treasure valuable to the Merchant Alliance, Athena's Fortune, or Reaper's Bones. They can be detonated instantly by a Weapon, Cannon, Throwable, Lightning, Fire, or upon colliding with a ship. While carried all explosives, besides the Trapmaker's Gunpowder Key, also have a fuse which can be manually ignited with the Primary Interact key and will cause the keg to explode in a few seconds or extinguished and reset with the secondary interaction key. Upon detonation kegs will cause damage to, and ignite, any nearby Players, Enemies, Ships, or other Explosives.
Types[]
Each Explosive type's method of obtaining and function is slightly differently:
Gunpowder Barrel[]
The standard and most common variant. It is a red and black barrel which can be found all over the The Sea of Thieves, but most commonly appears forts or alongside barrels of plenty.
Phantom Gunpowder Barrel[]
A unique reskin of the standard Gunpowder Barrel found only during Chapter II of the Shrouded Islands Adventure. Besides adopting a more ghostly appearance, the only unique feature of this explosive barrel is it's value of 0 gold.
Stronghold Gunpowder Barrel[]
Compared to the standard gunpowder barrel, stronghold gunpowder barrels are more valuable and when detonated it will result in an explosion 3 times the size of a standard barrel. These dark red bone-encrusted barrels are found primarily in the Vault of active Skeleton Forts, in the hands of ambiently spawning Skeletons during an Athena's Fortune Voyage, or dug up on a Skeleton's Orders map.
Keg of Ancient Black Powder[]
This is the Athena's Fortune variant and has a red and purple design with an inner green glow. It deals the same heavy damage as a Stronghold Gunpowder Barrel and is found in the Vault of an active Fort of Fortune or Fort of the Damned. It can also be acquired from Athena's Fortune Voyages and can only be sold to Athena's Fortune or Reaper's Bones.
Trapmaker's Gunpowder Key[]
The Trapmaker's Gunpowder Key is a special type of Quest Item that is used as part of The Art of the Trickster Tall Tale. It is purple in colour with metallic edges. It does not have a fuse but if detonated, it will explode with the same damage as a Stronghold Gunpowder Barrel.
Trivia[]
- Explosives, in particular, have a higher chance of having bad hit registration when shot. This is especially common when attempting to shoot kegs which are in the ocean.
