The Cannon is a Weapon, Ship component and Ship customization Item in Sea of Thieves. They are purchased at a Shipwright and equipped via a Ship Customization Chest. In addition to being standard equipment on Ships, Cannons also appear on some Islands, where they are often operated by Skeletons who fire at Ships that are passing by or attempting to dock.
Mechanics[edit | edit source]
Cannons are a ship's primary weapon. Each Cannon must be operated by a player in order to fire from it. They can be used to attack other Ships or Player Pirates and Enemies on land. Cannons need to be loaded before firing. Cannons can be loaded with Cannonballs, Cursed Cannonballs or Player Pirates. When a player fires a Cannon shot that successfully hits another Ship or an enemy creature, a short upbeat musical cue can be heard by the player who fired the shot. Cannons shoot at an arc that is influenced by the cannon's position and the speed of the ship. A good way of practicing Cannon fire accuracy is to try shooting at passing Islands or landmarks. Cannons also offer the ability for players to climb in and be fired, instead of cannonballs, to reach distant areas or other ships. Players do take fall damage when shot out of a cannon, if they fall far enough vertically, but do not take damage from lateral impacts.
Cannonball Fire can be used to damage different parts of an enemy's Ship. Hitting the Hull will leave ever bigger holes in it. Aiming for the Wheel can make the enemy's Ship harder to steer. Aiming for any single Mast can help destroy them and drastically lower the enemy Ship's speed. Aiming for the Capstan destroy's its pins, allowing less people to interact with it.
Tips[edit | edit source]
- Fighting ship-to-ship, plan and aim your cannonballs just below the waterline on the opposing ship, which will hit and make holes in their lower deck. Aiming too high will make holes above the water, which may not help sink the target ship.
- Try to spread your cannon shots out. Hitting the same spot over and over only widens an existing hole (although it will prevent the other crew from patching that one hole temporarily), but it does not speed up the buildup of water that much, it is better to leave the ship with more holes to fix.
- The Sloop and Brigantine are extremely vulnerable to attacks from the rear. You can be shot by cannon fire while on the wheel, the anchor, the sails, or even while repairing holes in the bottom deck. Players on top deck can get knocked off their ship from Cannon fire. Players attacking Sloops can use this knowledge to their advantage and players piloting Sloops should use this knowledge to guard their ship's weaknesses.
