Ancient Vaults are Vaults built by the Ancients hidden on Islands in Sea of Thieves. These Vaults are themed around certain Totems and can be opened by corresponding Totem Keys or Treasure Vault Keys. The Vaults can be accessed during Tall Tales with the Totem Key Quest Items, and outside Tall Tales with the help of Treasure Vault Keys, that can be tracked and found during Wayfinder Voyages issued by Gold Hoarders.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Ancient Vaults are devoted to Totems of the Ancients, placed at specific locations related to these Totems on The Sea of Thieves. The Vaults are all hidden inside cave systems and require a Key to be opened. The Keyholes are small square shaped pedestals on rocks, and only accept a Key of the matching Totem. Each Keyhole also has a cave painting of the Totem next to it.
When opened, the Caves lead to the Vault proper, secured by stone doors. The inside of the Vaults have a single central Stone Table with a magical screen, a Hand-shaped Button and three circular holes on the side. There are 4 Pillars inside, that have paintings on them that can be rotated to face the table. Between the Pillars, there is another Stone Door that usually hides away an item of value. These Vaults can have Traps or Skeletons inside them.
Totem Vaults[edit | edit source]
There are a total of 7 locked Totem Vaults hidden on Large Islands in The Sea of Thieves that can be opened with corresponding Keys. There are two ways to access the vaults - as a part of Tall Tales with Totem Keys or with the help of Wayfinder Voyages and Treasure Vault Keys.
|Moon Vault||Crescent Isle||Inside the Northern side of the Cave system.|
|Snake Vault||Mermaid's Hideaway||Under the North Western Arch.|
|Scarab Vault||Crook's Hollow||Southern cave wall close to the waterfall.|
|Boar Vault||Devil's Ridge||Amidst rocks on the South East beach.|
|Shark Vault||Kraken's Fall||Amidst rocks to the North under the big Arch.|
|Crab Vault||Uncharted Island (N-13)||In an underwater cave hidden among the coral reefs.|
|Eagle Vault||Fetcher's Rest||In the central cave system, next to Eagle cave paintings.|
|Sun Vault||Ashen Reaches||In the middle of a northern cave system cutting through the island.|
Tall Tales[edit | edit source]
Ancient Vaults are a regular part of The Shores of Gold Tall Tales. These Vaults will be visited during The Shroudbreaker, Stars of a Thief and The Art of the Trickster Tall Tales. Every time, Players will have to find corresponding Totem Key Quest Items to access the Vaults. Depending on the Tall Tale, the Vaults will include a pillar puzzle, combat encounters or traps inside and hide different Quest Items necessary for the completion of the Tall Tales. None of the Quest Items acquired during Tall Tales can be sold and are only valuable to the Crew who are doing the Tall Tale. The two vaults in The Devil's Roar are not accessible during Tall Tales.
Gold Hoarder Treasure Vaults[edit | edit source]
Outside Tall Tales, the Gold Hoarders use the Ancient Vaults to stash their Treasure. Players can access every Totem Vault (with the exclusion of the Crab Vault on Uncharted Island (N-13)) if they find a corresponding Treasure Vault Key to unlock these Vaults. Treasure Vault Keys are essentially identical to the Totem Key Quest Items with the main difference being that they can also be sold to the Gold Hoarders (or Reaper's Bones) for Gold, Reputation and Emissary Value.
Treasure Vault Keys can be acquired as a reward for Wayfinder Voyages issued by the Gold Hoarders. Players embarking on the Voyage will receive a Golden Wayfinder Compass in their Quest Radial Menu that leads them towards buried Torn Map Parchments. These Parchments piece together a Torn Map that shows the location of the buried Key with a large X. Depending on the difficulty of the Voyage, the Keys can be uncovered in three materials - Stone Treasure Vault Keys, Silver Treasure Vault Keys or Gold Treasure Vault Keys. The material of the key will determine the quality Treasure currently hidden in that Ancient Vault. Stone Keys uncover Stone Vaults with Treasure of little value, Silver Keys uncover Silver Vaults with more valuable Treasure and more scaffodling and Gold Keys uncover Gold Vaults with the highest value Treasure, but more platforms to jump through. The location of each vault is inscribed on the Keys, with the name of the exact Island stated in their name.
When accessed with Treasure Vault Keys, Ancient Vaults will have generous piles of Gold (worth between 75-300 depending on the size of the pile), Treasure Chests and Artefacts inside. Gold Hoarder Treasure Vaults will open for roughly 3 minutes, during which Player Crews can loot the Vault clean from its riches. Those who want an additional generous payout can try to solve the Puzzle of the Vault. Each Treasure Vault has 3 hidden Vault Medallions that need to be located and put in the central Stone Table in the Vault. The Medallions may require the player to do some climbing and precise jumping around the Vault. They can also be hidden on the sides of pillars. The Medallions always shine with a bright white Glint. Each Medallion will reveal the solution for one Pillar on the Stone Table. There are four Pillars in the Vault that can be moved around. The first three Pillar images are revealed on the Stone Table, the last Pillar image is a combination of the first three images. Players will need to push the button on the Stone Table to enter the Pillar Solution, after which, the central stone door will open with a Chest of Ancient Tributes. This Chest can also be sold to the Gold Hoarders or Reaper's Bones. The Chest, combined with the value of any retrieved Treasure items from the Vault are worth more than the Key of the Vault itself. However, be mindful that if you fail to retrieve anything from the Vault in the allotted time limit, the Key will be used and Players will return with nothing. When the Vault door closes after a time, any Players inside will be stuck, left to drown with water filling the room.
Players can buy Ashen versions of Wayfinder Voyages at Morrow's Peak Outpost, which takes Players throughout The Devil's Roar and lead them to one of the two Roar Vaults. These Vaults will have Ashen Versions of Treasure Chests and Trinkets inside them.

Medallion Vaults[edit | edit source]
There are five more Ancient Vaults on Tribute Peak in the Shores of Gold Tall Tale that revise Puzzles from previous Tall Tales. There are 4 open Vaults hidden in cliffs towards each compass direction of Tribute Peak. Their locations are marked in the Tale Book with additional hints on how to solve the Pillar-Puzzles inside.
The Tribute Peak Vaults are the following:
- Southern Vault - Hides the Shark Medallion
- Western Vault - Hides the Boat Medallion
- Eastern Vault - Hides the Warrior Medallion
- Northern Vault - Hides the Kraken Medallion
- Compass Vault - At the end of a spiraling pathway. The four other Medallions have to be placed into the Vault mechanism to unlock the door to the Gold Hoarder Coin.
